Persistence to do the boring stuff.
When your lying in bed and unable to move anything it’s easy to concentrate your time on trying to pick your foot up, after all you’ve got nothing else to do. The question is, can you still focus your energy into something that isn’t responding when there’s so much else that is.
I’m at a stage of my rehab now where I can physically do quite a lot and the temptation is to spend all your time doing the ‘fun’ things. Gate re-ed, weights, cycling; that’s easy, I enjoy them, but at the end of the day it’s the things that I can’t do that need the attention. I still have muscles that don’t work in my left leg and others that are suffering from confused messages, tone and spasticity. Most of the time the only way to try and correct these issues is with repetitive, monotonous and often mind numbing efforts. As in any walk of life it’s difficult to motivate yourself to do something when your seeing no results but it’s so important as to not leave anything behind.
It’s been the best part of 5 months now without any activity in my left ankle and so we are trying a different approach to try and get a result. Here Pete is using a tendon reflex to initiate a movement pattern. You normally don’t want to reinforce flexor withdrawal patterns but they can be useful. The aim is to stimulate the movement that I am missing with a reflex and over time transfer it into a conscious movement pattern. Get it going then dampen it down. Only time will tell but it seems to be starting to get a reaction…. just a few thousand more knocks and hopefully someone will answer the door. ✌️
P.s. Bench pressing the same as Lois now, her time as the strongest in the relationship is coming to an end…. watch out you big pigeon 🐦🏋🏽😏
