After half a day driving up the Pacific coast highway we pulled over and set off up a trail into the woods. A couple of miles in the path fizzled out which left us with two options… turn back the way we came, or push on and make our own trail. Getting eaten by a mountain Lion or a Bear probably isn’t high on the @tripadvisor ‘things to do in California’ list but the allure of a little bit of adventure is always too tempting. Three hours in the forest clambering over fallen redwoods and wading through mountain streams was starting to take its toll and even though I was saying; ‘ye, its fine, I know where we are,’ I was beginning to think something else…👀 Just as I was wondering if we would ever see the car again we emerged from the tree line and were confronted with the most breathtaking view of the Pacific. After soaking it all in for a while we made our way down the now obvious ridge line to the road and were home in time for dinner…
If I close my eyes I can take myself straight back. The warmth of the sun on my face, the smell of the sea in the air and the shades of blue where the sky meets the Pacific are things that I will never forget. In hospital I would often escape to this place when the mind started to wander, without it I’m not sure how I would of coped with some of those long nights.
To think we could have taken the easy option, given up and turned back to the car. To think we would have missed all of that because we were afraid of a little adventure. Life is an adventure and sometimes the path seems to just disappear. Don’t turn back, push on and make your own path because the reward may be just around the corner. ✌️🐻🦁⛰
